About The Position

Kentucky College Coaches are AmeriCorps State and National members that assist high school students with selecting, applying to, and being accepted to a college or career of their choice. This involves hosting school-wide activities and mentoring core students from each grade level (9th-12th grade), as designated by the member’s site supervisor. These priority core students will be students who: 1) will likely get through high school, but who are unlikely to go to college 2) would be first-generation college attendees and/or 3) are from low-income families.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident alien.
• Associate’s degree (preferred)
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Mentoring experience

Responsibilities

• Assist high school students with selecting, applying to, and being accepted to a college or career of their choice.
• Host school-wide activities.
• Mentor core students from each grade level (9th-12th grade), as designated by the member’s site supervisor.
• Help the school attain benchmarks such as number of students reaching college readiness, applying to college, filing the FAFSA, and moving from high school and accessing remedial courses during the first year of college.
• Help students in career planning.
• Help students with time and organizational skills.
• Recruit volunteers within the community to assist with career awareness.
• Assist with classroom instruction by embedding college planning materials among core content.
• Assist teachers and school counselors to develop effective tutoring plans for students who need academic assistance and linking students to volunteers in the community and at local colleges for tutoring.
• Mentor students about high school course selection and placement testing scores which can lead to successful college admission.
• Help students develop financial literacy skills.
• Incorporate college-bound curriculum within the site school.
• Assist with family nights, as related to college admission.
• Perform other types of mentoring based on the needs of students and the direction of school staff and policy.
