About The Position

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is seeking an American Sign Language Interpreter to play a vital role in ensuring AIDB’s culture of inclusion is reinforced and that students and employees feel connected, recognized, and proud to be a part of the organization. AIDB is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year. Our services span a lifetime, including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located throughout the State of Alabama with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings, and a manufacturing facility that is the state’s largest employer of adults who are Deaf, Blind, or DeafBlind.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Possess and maintain Alabama Interpreter License or Renewable Permit upon employment.
  • Must have at least three (3) months of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind.
  • Must have proven experience in utilizing a full range of communication and language levels including the use of sign, spoken language, and any additional modes of communication.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to interpreting.
  • Must know and adhere to the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Must possess skills in using Google Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license, an automobile for use on the job, and liability insurance in effect.
  • Must possess a minimum entry sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to the AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI) upon hire.
  • Possess a minimum entry sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED according to AIDB evaluation system (SLPI/SCPI); and ADVANCED PLUS must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Alabama Interpreting License within 36 months of employment.

  • One (1) year or more of formal work experience interpreting for the Deaf/DeafBlind.
  • One (1) year or more of community interpreting experience.
  • RID National Interpreter Certification

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting services and assist the Director of Interpreting as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards of practice.
  • Must be willing to travel on a daily basis. Extensive travel, including occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Willing and able to work flexible schedules to include holidays, nights, and weekends.
  • Assist in planning and participate in AIDB activities, i.e., White Cane, Deaf Awareness, educational workshops, social/community events, graduation, in-service week, summer camps, and/or statewide programs.
  • Prioritize assigned location/campus interpreting needs while also assisting with other interpreting needs across AIDB.
  • Work with other Deaf professionals to provide interpretation for agency workshops and events.
  • Enter current consumer information into a database as needed for consumer demographics.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor and other professionals.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards of practice outlined in the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Provide training/workshops related to working with interpreters within the local service area.
  • Complete all yearly AIDB internal training modules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Interpreting Services.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
