About The Position

Provide communication access services for students, staff, faculty, and the community of Deaf/Hard of Hearing persons using American Sign Language (ASL.) Reporting to the Director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, the full-time ASL interpreter enables direct interaction professionally and accurately.

Requirements

  • The minimum credential requirement of VQAS level III (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening) or other state equivalent (providing the VQAS test is taken and passed within 6 months of employment) credentials along with substantial experience in the field.
  • To obtain LU-approved driver``s certification, individuals must be 21 years of age or older, possess a valid driver``s license with a minimum of five (5) years of documented driving history, and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in American Sign Language clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business, government and community consumers and associates.
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver``s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates communication in the classroom for Deaf students/faculty and hearing students/faculty and university extracurricular events using American Sign Language.
  • Facilitates communication between Deaf and hearing persons for community assignments for Liberty University Interpreting Services (LUIS) using American Sign Language.
  • Adheres to the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct by maintaining confidentiality for all interpreting assignments, abiding by all other tenets of the CPC.
  • Prepares for assignment through thorough material review, logistical information gathering, meeting with presenters and event coordinators when necessary and team discussion ahead of time.
  • Advocates for the implementation of accessible practices across campus at various venues and environments, including digital platforms.
  • Contributes to the development of the interpreting field by providing observation opportunities and assignment debriefing with LU ASLI students and maintains consistent professional development through skill enhancing activities.
