About The Position

Under the supervision of certified teacher(s), prepare for small-group and individual instruction. Interprets/translates classroom instruction and individual directions to deaf students; convey instructor’s intent as well as spoken words. Uses reverse interpretation relaying questions and contributions from deaf students to instructor, and encourage deaf students to use Standard Sign. Assists the classroom instructor in meeting needs of the deaf student(s) and will communicate instructions and other information from the instructor to the deaf student(s). Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certificated teacher. Maintains a positive working relationship with co-workers, staff and the public. Participate regularly in staff meetings, in-service programs, workshops and seminars. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Two years of college and/or A.A. required and/or completion of the ETS test.
  • Passed the EIPA with a minimum score of 4.0 OR have the National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf with the IEPA written test with a passing score.
  • Experience interpreting for the deaf using fluent American Sign Language.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Ability to follow directions and to follow through efficiently and independently on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing.
  • Evidence of emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to cultural, developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of students and community.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
