About The Position

The Ambulatory Pre-Op/Post-Op RN delivers safe, patient- and family-centered care across the surgical continuum. This role utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to prepare patients for procedures and manage their recovery before discharge.

Requirements

  • RN license
  • Experience in pre-operative and post-operative care
  • Proficiency in the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation)
  • Ability to perform physical and psychosocial patient assessments
  • Knowledge of medical histories and informed consent verification
  • Skill in starting intravenous (IV) lines
  • Ability to administer pre-op medications
  • Competence in monitoring patient vitals, hemodynamic status, and level of consciousness
  • Experience in pain management and treatment of side effects like nausea
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique
  • Ability to complete post-anesthesia documentation
  • Skill in providing discharge instructions and post-op care education

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical and psychosocial patient assessments, review medical histories, and verify surgical site/informed consent.
  • Review daily schedules, prepare clinical care areas, and complete pre-operative phone interviews or scheduling.
  • Start intravenous (IV) lines, administer pre-op medications, and obtain necessary diagnostic test results.
  • Communicate patient status changes or clinical concerns to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and family members.
  • Monitor patient vitals, hemodynamic status, and level of consciousness as they emerge from anesthesia or sedation.
  • Manage post-procedural pain, treat side effects like nausea, and use aseptic technique for wound or surgical site checks.
  • Complete post-anesthesia documentation and verify that strict clinical discharge criteria are fully met.
  • Deliver thorough discharge instructions and post-op care education to the patient and their designated caregiver.
