  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license and demonstrate a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a DMV Firefighter Endorsement within six months of employment.
  • Possession of a current California EMT certification or National Registry EMT certification eligible for local accreditation.
  • Possession of a current CPR certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent (Healthcare Provider Level).

  • Some training or education related to fire department operations is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Operates ambulances and other department vehicles safely and proficiently in emergency and non-emergency situations, including Code 3 responses.
  • Maintains a steady state of operational readiness.
  • Operates safely and effectively beyond even one’s own responsibilities.
  • Maintains, enhances, and utilizes technical knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively enhancing on emergency scene operations.
  • Remains calm, thinks clearly and acts decisively on the emergency scenes.
  • Performs sustained physical exertion during emergency response, including walking, running, kneeling, crouching, and crawling on uneven, wet, slippery, or unstable surfaces at incident and patient locations.
  • Lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls loaded stretchers, gurneys, and medical equipment, including up and down stairs and ramps.
  • Lifts and transfers patients of varying size and mobility, up to 100+ pounds unassisted and up to 200+ pounds with assistance.
  • Reaches above the head and below the waist, often in confined spaces such as vehicle interiors, bathrooms, and stairwells.
  • Operates medical equipment and performs patient care procedures, including sustained repetitive exertion during CPR.
  • Sits for extended periods while operating an emergency vehicle.
  • Works extended, irregular, or rotating shifts under physically and mentally demanding conditions.
  • Handles and transports sharps containers.
  • Works in close proximity to patients in confined spaces, including ambulance interiors, residences, bathrooms, and vehicles involved in collisions.
