About The Position

These values are a gift The Orchards staff members share every day with residents and each other. The AMAP performs their duties under the supervision and authorization of the Supervising AMAP RN. The primary responsibility of the position is the administration of medications to the assisted living residents at Pepperberry Suites.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed the facility Medication Administration Program approved by the Department of Health and Human Resources through the authorizing agency of OHFLAC.
  • Passed the State approved competency test.
  • Participate in retraining every two years.
  • Be monitored and supervised by a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Administer medications only in the facility where training and evaluation occurred.
  • Able to read, write and comprehend English.
  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Complete annual state mandated training requirements (Regular In-services as well as any external training).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret nursing periodicals, scientific journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to interpret reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of managers, residents, family members, physicians, therapists, employees, outside business contacts, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts in situations such as measuring medications, taking temperatures and blood pressure, measuring wounds, using medical equipment, assessing changes in a resident's blood sugar level, ordering supplies, and measuring dietary intake and urine output.
  • Ability to compute volume, rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions when assessing resident needs and conditions, prioritizing own work and that of subordinates, communicating with family members, and investigating situations that arise from residents, family members, supervisors, and employees.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of written or verbal technical instructions from supervisors.
  • Ability to interpret non-verbal gestures, body movements, and facial expressions as cues to determine residents' needs.
  • May need to use the computer to chart daily resident attendance at programs, update care plans, insert new assessment information, record use of PRN medications, and note physical or behavior changes.
  • Uses e-mail to communicate with others internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software for creating reports and correspondence.
  • Certified AMAP.
  • CPR certification.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Tuberculosis screening is required annually.
  • Ability to use lift equipment.
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit at a desk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb stairs or balance, stoop or crouch, pump a foot pedal, and use sense of smell.
  • Must regularly move up to 50 pounds when pushing the medicine cart.
  • Must occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds when moving residents by wheelchair or assisting the Aides with the residents.
  • Must occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include: close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision, close vision for computer and paper detail work, distance vision to see resident call lights, color vision to identify medications and assess resident conditions, and depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Nursing skills specific to geriatric residents.
  • Additional skills with special-need geriatric residents such as those with dementia, Alzheimer's or those requiring advanced health care.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications to assisted living residents.
  • Maintain communication with the Supervising AMAP RN regarding any issues of concern, including changes in sign or symptoms, discrepancies with pharmacy labels, medication disposal needs, unusual medication appearance, deviations from the six rights of medication administration, new prescriptions, discontinued medications, resident refusals, inability to awaken a resident resulting in a missed dose, questions about as-needed medications, or any doubt about the medication administration process.
  • Ensure medication cabinets/drawers contain only currently prescribed medications.
  • Destroy outdated and discontinued medications with the Nursing Supervisor in accordance with all regulations.
  • Ensure resident medications are re-ordered in a timely manner and are available for scheduled and as-needed administration.
  • Understand and utilize the medication delivery system, which includes individual tablets or capsules in foil-sealed bubbles, individual prescription bottles, pharmacy-labeled liquid containers, and minimal over-the-counter containers labeled with the resident's name.
  • Ensure all medications are stored in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Keep the medication system key on their person while on duty.
  • Complete all required documentation and records on an ongoing basis.
  • Follow all regulations and requirements pertaining to unlicensed personnel for appropriate preparation and administration of medication.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all residents, families, and fellow employees.
  • Initiate immediate intervention in abusive situations to protect the resident and report allegations according to policy.
  • Notify Director of Nursing when there are changes in condition and emergencies.
