About The Position

Vista Radio is seeking an experienced AM Regional News Anchor/Reporter based in Courtenay, B.C., to serve its Vancouver Island news operation. This role involves delivering morning regional newscasts for stations across Vancouver Island and the Kootenays. It is an early-morning broadcasting position where the successful candidate will be the trusted voice for listeners across these regions. Consistent, dependable performance during the early-morning news cycle is the primary operational requirement. Applicants must be comfortable starting work before the first scheduled newscasts and thrive in a fast-paced live broadcast environment where accuracy, urgency, and sound editorial judgment are essential. After the morning news cycle, the position shifts primarily to reporting focused on the Comox Valley and surrounding region, with contributions to Vista Radio’s provincial news operation through collaboration with the Provincial Reporter and local newsrooms. Requirements

  • Previous broadcast newsroom experience, supported by post-secondary education in journalism, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • An exceptional on-air delivery that is clear, conversational, authoritative, and engaging.
  • The ability to perform consistently in an early-morning live broadcast environment while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and composure.
  • Strong broadcast writing skills with the ability to write for the ear and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent news judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Experience producing and delivering live or recorded radio newscasts.
  • The ability to lead breaking-news coverage, adapt quickly to developing stories, and make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure.
  • Confidence working independently while collaborating with reporters, News Directors, and producers across a regional news network.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's licence.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with WordPress, Audacity, KLZ Newsroom (or similar newsroom software), and radio automation systems is considered an asset.
  • A solid understanding of digital publishing and social media as part of a modern newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver the morning regional newscasts for Vista Radio’s Vancouver Island and Kootenay stations, providing accurate, engaging and professional live news coverage.
  • Manage the initial morning response to breaking news and emergency events, updating newscasts as stories develop and coordinating coverage with the appropriate local News Directors and newsrooms.
  • Coordinate content from Vista Radio's Vancouver Island newsrooms to build regional newscasts that reflect the distinct communities served by each station.
  • Work closely with Vista Radio's Provincial Reporter, sharing story ideas, coordinating coverage, and providing local context for stories affecting Vancouver Island.
  • Following the morning news cycle, contribute original reporting from Courtenay, the Comox Valley and surrounding communities, with broader Vancouver Island assignments as warranted.
  • Develop and maintain reliable sources throughout the Comox Valley and surrounding communities.
  • Research, write, produce, and voice broadcast-ready news content for radio and digital platforms, including actualities.
  • Record and edit audio for news reports and special programming.
  • Write and publish accurate, audience-focused digital stories and related content for station websites and social platforms.
  • Provide occasional newscast reading support for other Vista Radio markets during scheduled coverage periods, emergencies or staff absences.
  • Participate in editorial meetings, air checks, and ongoing coaching.
  • Represent Vista Radio professionally within the communities we serve.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
