About The Position

This position assists the Teacher and administration in school by performing various duties. The role involves maintaining professional working relationships, assisting with classroom management, working with parents, tutoring students, preparing classroom activities, performing clerical work, assisting with displays and bulletin boards, caring for equipment, and supervising playground, cafeteria, and bus loading activities. The position also requires participation in inservice training programs and other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of 48 semester hours of academic credit that includes 15 semester hours in language arts, reading, writing, mathematics or professional education (earned from a nationally or regionally accredited college/university) OR Passage of Educational Assistant Assessment (ParaPro, ParaEducator, and Basic Skills).
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • New Mexico Public Education Educational Assistant Level III License required.

  • Passing score on the ParaPro exam (457)
  • Minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university, with at least 15 of those credits dedicated to language arts (3 hours), mathematics (3 hours), writing (3 hours), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6 hours).

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a professional working relationship with employees and students.
  • Assists with classroom management routines.
  • Assists the teacher in working with parents.
  • Under the supervision of the teacher, tutors individual students or groups of students.
  • Prepares classroom activities under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Performs clerical work.
  • Assists in preparing class displays and bulletin boards.
  • Cares for equipment.
  • Assists teacher with classroom activities.
  • Assumes responsibility for duties relating to the supervision of playground, cafeteria, bus loading and other school related activities.
  • Participates in inservice training programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
