About The Position

The Alternative Education Program Teacher/Counselor works collaboratively with the regular classroom teachers to provide instruction and support services to students who have been temporarily placed in the alternative education program for disruptive behavior or other reasons for which they are unable to succeed in the regular classroom. The Offensive Assistant Football Coach is responsible to the Athletic Director/Head Football Coach for assisting in the management of the school district’s football program. Specific responsibilities include assisting the Head Football Coach on the offensive side of the football team and working with other football coaches to ensure consistent and effective offensive strategies throughout the football program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Ability to effectively manage difficult students, including students requiring behavioral management.
  • Ability to motivate low achieving students.
  • Demonstrated leadership and/or mentoring skills in working with youth.
  • Ability to understand and address individualized needs of students assigned
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual
  • Effective communication skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategies for football offense, experience working with quarterbacks preferred.
  • 3 years of teaching experience
  • 3 years of successful coaching experience
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, administration, staff, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop plan for instructional activities and behavioral management.
  • Implement the programs of study approved by Lorena ISD.
  • Conduct consistent processes of documentation of student progress.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that effectively support student learning and progress, including technology.
  • Provide instruction that is consistent with the student’s Individual Instructional Plan and behavior modification plan.
  • Communicate with each regular classroom teacher on a weekly basis to coordinate instruction for the students enrolled in the alternative education program.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal measures.
  • Consult district and outside resources regarding educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Coordinate efforts to remedy unsatisfactory student progress.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, medical and emotional development of students.
  • Conduct a periodic evaluation of, and amend accordingly, the alternative education program and procedures.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and potentially physically restraining students as a last resort in order to maintain safety and well-being.
  • Consult with classroom teachers regarding the management of student behavior according to IEP.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities at all times.
  • Supervise students at all times in accordance with state, county and school policies.
  • Plan and assign the work for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.
  • Maintain and order supplies and equipment necessary for the successful operation of the instructional program.
  • Provide instruction and coach students to develop their skills and ability on the offensive side of the ball in football and in any other sport assigned.
  • Responsible for the game plan and preparation for the offensive side of the football program.
  • Direct the scheduling and recruitment of coaches for the 7 on 7 football program.
  • Develop offensive training/practice plan for all practices, including drills and coaching methods.
  • Ensure that all offensive coaches understand the offensive schemes, plays, and practice organization and drills.
  • Maintain an expectation of academic progress and performance that is consistent with the expectations for progress and performance of the school district.
  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Keep informed of and help ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
  • Assist athletic director to monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Work with athletic director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings.
  • Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on out-of-town trips.
  • Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
  • Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Complete duty assignments as designated by the principal.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Utilize equipment and strategies that support student progress, including physical supports, visual schedules, communication boards.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and athletic director.
