Alternate Plumbing and Gas Inspector - Town of Charlton, MA
About The Position
The Town of Charlton is seeking to fill a vacancy for an alternate plumbing and gas inspector to assist the current Inspector. The alternate inspector will assist the current inspector with inspections to ensure residential and commercial buildings are conforming with legal requirements, state codes and safe practices. The alternate inspector will have frequent contact with property owners, contractors, inspectors, municipal departments and many others and must maintain and effective working relationship, while enforceing the codes and laws. The position requires frequent travel throughout the Town. The hours are varied and dependent on the needs of the department and inspections required. The rate will be $80.00 per inspection and processed through payroll.
Requirements
- Comprehensive knowledge of state plumbing codes, gas-fitting regulations, fuel gas standards, and relevant local ordinances.
- Strong understanding of plumbing and gas system design, installation practices, materials, and safety requirements.
- Familiarity with building codes, construction methods, and related trades.
- Knowledge of inspection procedures, permitting processes, and code enforcement practices.
- Understanding of workplace safety standards, including OSHA, confined-space regulations, and hazardous materials awareness.
- Proficiency with computers, inspection software, mobile applications, and digital reporting tools.
- Must hold a valid Massachusetts Masters Plumbing & Gas Fitters Inspectors License as issued by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.
- Thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts Plumbing Code (and national standards) and the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications.
- Ability to enforce codes and regulations impartially, firmly and tactfully.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, building officials, code enforcement personnel and the public.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
