About The Position

Under general supervision, this position provides advanced life support emergency medical care for injured or ill individuals in emergency and non-emergency situations. The ALS Medic responds to emergency calls, assesses patient conditions, administers appropriate treatment within scope of practice and established protocols, and transports patients safely to medical facilities. This role requires professional judgment, technical medical expertise, and the ability to function effectively under stressful and hazardous conditions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a released ALS provider within an E911 emergency response system.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Virginia Office of EMS EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic certification, or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification or equivalent.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification.
  • Virginia OEMS approved Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) Class II or equivalent.
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
  • Successful completion of departmental field training and precepting program.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background checks, medical evaluation, and substance abuse screening.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide efficient and immediate advanced life support care to critically ill or injured patients.
  • Assess the nature and extent of medical emergencies and determine the need for additional assistance or specialized resources.
  • Administer appropriate emergency medical procedures and treatments in accordance with established protocols and scope of practice.
  • Operate ambulances and emergency response vehicles safely while adhering to all applicable traffic laws and emergency vehicle regulations.
  • Utilize and maintain advanced medical equipment including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, airway management devices, intravenous therapy equipment, and related ALS tools.
  • Coordinate patient care and communicate effectively with hospitals, physicians, public safety personnel, and healthcare facilities.
  • Complete accurate patient care reports and all required documentation using electronic reporting systems.
  • Inspect, clean, sanitize, and maintain ambulances, medical equipment, and station facilities to ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental and state requirements.
  • Attend required training sessions, continuing education programs, meetings, and certifications to maintain professional competency.
  • Assist other EMS personnel and public safety agencies during emergency operations, rescue incidents, and disaster responses.
  • Comply with all departmental policies, procedures, standard operating guidelines, and medical protocols.
  • Participate in community outreach programs, public education events, and medical standby assignments.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and report equipment defects or vehicle issues for repair.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel based on departmental operational needs.
