About The Position

A highly responsible, motivated student who is interested in helping fellow students succeed and acting as a mentor to these students. A Peer Educator works with the course faculty and Aleshire Center staff to assist in the course's facilitation and provide general assistance to the faculty member. We are seeking to hire four Peer Educator positions for four different classes; successful applicants will be assigned to one course for the duration of the semester. Requirements

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at Washburn University.
  • Must be in good academic standing and have completed one or more of the following courses with a 3.0 GPA or higher: 1) LE100/HN202: Exploring Concepts of Leadership 2) LE200/HN201: Ethical Responsibilities of Leadership 3) CE250/HN202/KS399: Intro. to Community Studies
  • Must be declared as a Community Studies Minor or a Leadership Studies Minor/Certificate.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and initiative.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Peer Educators will be assigned to one of the following classes. Applicants must be available for the full duration of the assigned course: 1) LE100A: Tuesday & Thursday, 9:30am - 10:45am 2) LE100B: Tuesday & Thursday, 11:00am - 12:15pm 3) LE200: Monday & Wednesday, 2:30pm - 3:45pm 4) CE250: Monday & Wednesday, 2:30pm - 3:45pm
  • Work in the Aleshire Center student office a maximum of 3 hours per week. One hour must be designated as a planning meeting with the instructor(s).

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of prominent computer programs (Word, Canva, etc.)
  • Familiar with APA format.
  • Demonstrated involvement on campus or in the community (student organizations, intramurals, activities, programming, volunteering, etc.).
  • Knowledgeable of the Aleshire Center for Leadership and Community Engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with facilitation of discussions and activities during the semester in and outside of the classroom; requires class attendance.
  • Works collaboratively with course instructor(s) and guest speakers. Meets weekly with instructor(s).
  • Serve as peer support and responds to questions from students in the course.
  • Acts as a role model and resource for students.
  • Works with students to build academic and social skills/abilities to assist them in succeeding at Washburn.
  • Complete tasks as needed for specific role as Peer Educator.
  • Ability to facilitate group interactions, class community, and team successes in group projects and activities.
  • Performs additional job-related or non-related duties as assigned.
