About The Position

The State of Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) is accepting applications for a newly created Airport Deputy Fire Chief (Military Department) position, located at the CT Air National Guard location in East Granby, CT. The Wing's mission focuses on Air Mobility, providing global air transportation of equipment and supplies using C-130 Hercules aircraft. This includes cargo and passenger airlift for military personnel, equipment, and supplies worldwide. The position is full-time, first-shift, Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week. Successful completion of a federal background investigation and possession of a valid Driver's license (REAL ID) are required. The CTMD has both federal and state missions, including training and coordinating state emergency response assets, and planning for citizen protection during emergencies. The department is committed to environmentally friendly military operations.

Requirements

Eight (8) years of experience as a Firefighter in an organized firefighting service.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at the level of a Fire Captain in an organized firefighting service.
Current Motor Vehicle Operator's license with valid endorsements.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or EMT - Paramedic certification.
Appropriate security clearance to access military installations and the respective airfields.
General good health and sufficient strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform the duties of the class.
Ability to apply management principles and practices.
Ability to implement fire investigation, inspection, and prevention methodology and procedures.
Ability to evaluate emergency medical services situations and develop effective courses of actions.
Ability to implement Incident Command System.
Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes, and regulations.
Knowledge of firefighting, fire prevention, and crash rescue practices and procedures as applied to airports and aircraft crash situations.
Ability to implement training practices and procedures.
Knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Directs day-to-day operational and administrative activities of the department.
Coordinates, plans, and manages unit activities.
Formulates operational goals and objectives.
Develops or assists in the development of related policy.
Interprets and administers pertinent laws.
Evaluates staff.
Assists in preparation of unit budget and financial planning.
Maintains contacts with individuals who might impact operational activities.
Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview, and selection.
Analyzes, plans, and directs crew responses to emergency and non-emergency operations including aircraft crash rescue methodologies.
Provides oversight in the utilization of Incident Command System to ensure appropriate organization and delegation of duties in emergency situations.
Directs and conducts training in areas related to fire, emergency medical services, crash rescue, and other emergency response activities.
Provides instruction and training to firefighting and non-firefighting departmental personnel with respect to fire prevention practices and procedures.
Plans, organizes, and directs fire prevention and safety inspection activities including regular fire drills and evaluates effectiveness of practices and procedures.
Provides oversight to contractor construction projects to ensure compliance with fire safety codes.
Directs investigations of fire losses and/or property damage and prepares appropriate fact-finding reports.
Directs maintenance and updating of equipment and plans staffing necessary to carry out operations.
Coordinates activities with federal, state, and local fire authorities.
Acts in the absence of the Installation Fire Chief.
May prepare reports on operations and activities to ensure compliance with national and federal regulations, standards, and directives.
Performs related duties as required.
