About The Position

This National Guard Title 32 excepted service position is for an Aircraft Mechanic, Position Description Number D0483000, with the Maryland Army Aviation Support Facility (MD AASF), National Guard. The mechanic performs aircraft maintenance duties—including troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, repair, and ground testing—on one or more types of military fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. This is a career-ladder position; selection may be at any advertised level, with potential noncompetitive promotion to the full-performance level after qualifications are verified and management concurs.

The position requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, and the selectee must wear the military uniform. Applicants who are not current Guard members must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the military grade listed in the announcement. The position may require irregular or overtime hours to support operational needs or contingencies. The employee must maintain awareness of environmental responsibilities under applicable requirements.

Requirements

• Membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard is required before the effective date of placement; applicants not currently in the Guard must be eligible for immediate membership.
• Must be eligible for employment in the military grade listed in the announcement; the listed grade range is E-1 through E-8.
• Must be able to obtain a Secret security clearance within one year of appointment.
• Federal employment suitability, as determined by a background investigation, is required.
• Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must be able to establish effective professional working relationships and contribute to a cooperative working environment.
• Must be able to work irregular and/or overtime hours when required for operations or contingencies, potentially outside the normal duty day.
• General experience: experience or training removing and replacing aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and making adjustments and settings to established specifications; skill in using hand tools and test equipment.
• WG-08 specialized experience: 12 months of experience or training removing and installing aircraft parts, components, and accessories with detailed guidance; following detailed instructions for routine repairs and modifications; and using common hand tools for mechanical repairs.
• WG-10 specialized experience: 18 months of experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic aircraft systems during overhaul or modification; coordinating mechanics' work and scheduling maintenance; and instructing lower-graded mechanics and other personnel in disassembly and reassembly of crash-damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls for return to a shipping container.
• Experience is evaluated based on duties performed, not solely on rank; applicable compatibility criteria and assignments must be followed.
• Experience or training records must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the position's duties.
• Must provide transcripts or other documentation to support educational claims.
• A qualifying conviction for a crime of domestic violence disqualifies an individual from performing this position's duties.
• May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
• Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
• Acceptance of the excepted service position constitutes agreement to the military membership and uniform requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft, including pre-inspection, daily, pre-flight, post-flight, and special inspections.
• Conduct fuel-contamination checks, oil sampling, and inspections of onboard emergency equipment.
• Check aircraft hydraulic, electrical, transmission, power, and related systems.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft.
• Repair and test aircraft systems, assemblies, and surfaces using test equipment, visual checks, and instruments to identify problems and determine repair requirements.
• Remove components and assemblies; repair or replace defective parts and components; and reinstall repaired items in aircraft.
• Install, align, and adjust major components and assemblies, including engines, propellers or rotors, transmissions, and hydraulic systems, assisting specialists as required.
• Adjust related systems that may be affected by repairs.
• Conduct ground functional tests of aircraft systems.
• Service aircraft with oil, de-icing fluid, fuel, and hydraulic fluid.
• Launch and recover assigned and transient aircraft and perform inspections before takeoff, including checks for leaks, cut lines, tire issues, and loose panels.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
