The Aircraft Mechanic with a Structural Skill Set performs a variety of simple to moderately complex tasks on airplane general, airframe and powerplant systems. This role involves performing maintenance on the WB-57 Platform, including mechanical systems, and/or ground support equipment. The mechanic will repair, inspect and maintain structural, mechanical and electrical elements of the aircraft, and provide oversight and training to others in aircraft maintenance tasks. Duties may include Designated System Inspector (DSI) responsibilities, troubleshooting systems, documenting maintenance per QA and regulatory requirements, and performing Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks. The role also requires maintaining tool control, complying with safety rules, and using NASA’s automated maintenance data system (NAMIS) for equipment records and maintenance documentation. Additionally, the mechanic will assemble structural parts, assess damage, advise on repairs, ensure aircraft component balance, and manufacture jigs, fixtures, forms, and molds. They will use metalworking equipment to form, cut, bend, and fasten parts, and be knowledgeable in the use of various tools, with the ability to train others. The role also includes identifying, removing, and treating corrosion, applying protective coatings, and handling hazardous waste according to environmental standards. Inspections of structures and components, interpretation of findings, and posting entries in NAMIS are also key responsibilities.
