About The Position

Responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic control duties in a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Air Traffic Control Tower. This position operates under the general supervision of the Tower Manager. The incumbent is expected to perform established duties independently, with detailed instructions and observation provided for new or revised procedures. The project timeline for this role is November 2026 through April 2027. Operations run seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mountain Time, during the operational period. Hours may be adjusted based on airline schedules, aircraft activity, FAA requirements, or other airport operational needs.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate.
  • Must possess a current Class II Medical Certificate.
  • Position is subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements.
  • Must have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating, or an FAA Credential with a tower rating, for a minimum of six months in an Air Traffic Control Tower.

Responsibilities

  • Makes decisions regarding the order of departures to ensure equitable treatment and adherence to clearances.
  • Determines takeoff times and directions, and necessary departure turns.
  • Decides whether inbound aircraft should land immediately or circle, and adjusts distances for controlled arrivals.
  • Assigns the active runway and determines the possibility of simultaneous runway use.
  • Manages the timing and methods for interspersing arrivals and departures to minimize delays.
  • Issues clearances for runway use by landing and departing aircraft to ensure standard separation.
  • Sequences arriving traffic before it enters the traffic pattern to ensure a safe and orderly flow on final approach.
  • Applies IFR separation standards, as delegated, to provide initial separation between IFR arrivals and departures, and between successive IFR departures.
  • Sequences VFR and IFR traffic, using radar as an aid and separating IFR traffic when delegated.
  • Authorizes VFR flights through the airport traffic area when appropriate.
  • Determines the usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids.
  • Monitors navigational aids and control panels, including BRITE display, for alignment and presentation.
  • Instructs pilots to change radio frequencies/radar beacon codes.
  • Coordinates with other controllers on the movements of arrival and departure aircraft when traffic conditions warrant.
  • Preplans traffic sequencing and separation over an area up to a 5-mile radius or more.
  • Preplans and sets up checkpoints to ensure traffic separation maintenance.
  • Maintains a continuous mental picture and evaluation of a constantly changing traffic complex.
  • Maintains continuous radio watch with aircraft previously contacted.
  • Accepts responsibility for handling IFR traffic at the airport.
  • Studies weather reports and forecasts, obtains LAWRS/SAWRS weather certification, observes weather, and records pilot reports to assess weather impact on traffic.
  • Furnishes aircraft with information on field conditions, altimeter settings, weather, navigational aid status, and observed aircraft malfunctions.
  • Forwards pilot weather reports and personal weather observations to the weather bureau and appropriate center.
  • Operates light guns, runway lights, field lighting, and jet barriers.
  • Orients lost or distressed aircraft pilots.
  • Determines if a given situation may require coordination with operations offices, airport management, and emergency services.
  • Performs lower grade level duties as necessary for operational requirements and proficiency maintenance.
  • Provides on-the-job training (OJT) to others.
