About The Position

Make a positive impact as an Air Quality Specialist Trainee with the Department of Environmental Protection. This position allows you to work with businesses, communities, and fellow staff to ensure clean and safe air. You will help review emissions data, support inspections, and assist with enforcement actions. Step into a role where your work helps safeguard Pennsylvania’s air quality. This position supports air quality compliance by reviewing data, conducting site visits, and helping with reporting and safety tasks. The employee participates in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program to learn the duties of the role.

Requirements

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field
  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Examine emission inventory information, verify accuracy, and ensure timely data entry in DEP systems
  • Visit industrial and commercial sites to observe equipment, document findings, and assess compliance
  • Follow all safety policies, report hazards, and maintain safe practices during field work
  • Assist in documenting violations, preparing notices, and participating in follow up actions
  • Communicate with permit staff, regulated entities, and regional offices to support program needs
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and stay updated on policy and regulatory changes
