The District is recruiting for an Air Quality Inspector to fill the current vacancy in our Fresno, office. The eligible list established as a result of this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies. THE POSITION: Air Quality Inspector I is the entry-level class in the field inspection series. Incumbents learn the principles and practices necessary to evaluate and enforce compliance with air pollution control regulations. Incumbents will conduct inspections of manufacturing, industrial, commercial, and agricultural operations to ensure adherence to air quality standards and regulations; use monitoring equipment and instrumentation to measure and evaluate various emissions and particulates; respond to and investigate public complaints regarding air pollution concerns; perform spot checks to identify permit and emission violations; conduct chemical and plume evaluation tests and record findings; issue violation notices; and conduct permit inspections on newly established facilities. After two years of service, incumbents are eligible to promote to Air Quality Inspector II. At the II level, incumbents are fully competent to perform the full range of inspection and compliance assignments requiring considerable judgment and knowledge of a variety of industries. The current salary range for Air Quality Inspector II is $7,430.11 to $9,038.01 per month.

Requirements

• Requires a Bachelor of Science degree with major coursework in chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
• Experience in providing sub-professional, technical support in an air quality setting may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years.
• Candidates must submit acceptable documentation of all degrees/education claimed on their application, prior to an offer of employment.
• Qualified applicants must possess an aptitude for learning the following: common biological, chemical, and physical processes that cause air pollution; techniques of modifying production processes and equipment that can reduce emissions; and applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
• Must possess skill in applying theories, principles, and practices of air quality to inspection and compliance matters
• Must possess skill in preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials
• Must possess skill in maintaining accurate records and files
• Must possess basic keyboarding skills
• Must possess skill in exercising sound independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines
• Must possess skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire
• Must meet the District's medical standards for this classification
• Must have the ability to meet the District’s respiratory protection requirements (which include obtaining certification to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus)
• Must complete training provided to meet the required standards by the State of California to be certified as a Visible Emission Evaluator
• Must be available for rotational on-call duty during weekends and non-business hours
• Must sign a waiver to release all information related to past employment
• Must complete a conflict of interest form
• Must be able to attend work on a daily basis as scheduled
