About The Position

This position primarily conducts inspections, reviews records and permits, evaluates reports, provides technical assistance, and investigates complaints to evaluate compliance with the Air Pollution Control Law and Regulations. This position may conduct ambient air monitoring, as needed. This position also initiates and follows through on enforcement in cases of non-compliance in order to protect, enhance, and preserve air quality in Virginia. Please note this position follows a hybrid work schedule to include both in-office and telework. Candidates must be able to work from the assigned work location in Virginia.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of scientific and/or manufacturing/commercial/industrial/mechanical processes and air pollution control regulations and standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, and perform tasks independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and understand mechanical and industrial processes.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to apply established policy, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to use computers for word processing and data management.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights and maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Combination of education and/or training/work experience demonstrating competence in environmental, engineering/physical/biological or related science.
  • Requires completion of EPA Method 9 Certification within 6 months of employment, and maintaining certification as deemed necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Must use hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, ear protection, gloves and/or other protective clothing that may be required in industrial settings.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conducting air compliance inspections and determining compliance with applicable laws, regulations and permits.
  • Investigate complaints.
  • Documenting observations, compliance status and recommendations using DEQ software and templates.
  • Documenting and updating enforcement actions in the database within agency timeframes.
  • Collecting data/samples and performing Q/A on ambient air monitoring stations, as needed, in accordance with federal standards and the Division of Air Monitoring Quality Assurance Manual, regulations, and other requirements.
  • Maintaining complete and accurate logs of records and submitting reports.
