About The Position

This position's primary purpose is to assist a special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The aide will support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instructional strategies. This role operates under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, two years of study or 48 hours at an institution of higher learning.
Paraprofessional Aide Certification required (can be obtained once employed).
Ability to work with children with disabilities.
Ability to organize and be detail-oriented.
Able to operate a computer.
Ability to provide instruction to individual or small groups of students.
Physically and emotionally able to perform assigned tasks.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Communicate and work with students.
Must possess personal qualities related to respect for the rights and confidentiality of others.
Experience with students (work in church-related schools, day camps, youth groups, private schools, licensed day-care centers, or similar experience).

Responsibilities

Provide direct instruction to students under the supervision of a teacher.
Maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.
Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Help the teacher keep administrative records and prepare reports.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, and positioning.
Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
Help manage student behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
Supervise students before, during, and after school, including during bus loading/unloading, playground, cafeteria, and classroom activities.
Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Participate in staff development training programs.
Participate in faculty meetings and special events.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or administrative staff.
