About The Position

This position's primary purpose is to assist a special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The aide will support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instructional strategies. This role operates under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, two years of study or 48 hours at an institution of higher learning.
  • Paraprofessional Aide Certification required (can be obtained once employed).
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities.
  • Ability to organize and be detail-oriented.
  • Able to operate a computer.
  • Ability to provide instruction to individual or small groups of students.
  • Physically and emotionally able to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Communicate and work with students.
  • Must possess personal qualities related to respect for the rights and confidentiality of others.
  • Experience with students (work in church-related schools, day camps, youth groups, private schools, licensed day-care centers, or similar experience).

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction to students under the supervision of a teacher.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help the teacher keep administrative records and prepare reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, and positioning.
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Help manage student behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
  • Supervise students before, during, and after school, including during bus loading/unloading, playground, cafeteria, and classroom activities.
  • Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Participate in staff development training programs.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or administrative staff.
