About The Position

This position assists a special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities within a special education setting. The aide will support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instructional strategies. This role operates under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, two years of study, or 48 hours at an institution of higher learning.
  • Paraprofessional Aide Certification required (can be obtained once employed).
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities.
  • Ability to organize and be detail-oriented.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to provide instruction to individual or small groups of students.
  • Physically and emotionally able to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate and work with students.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must possess personal qualities related to respect for the rights and confidentiality of others.
  • Experience working with students (e.g., church schools, day camps, youth groups, private schools, licensed day-care centers, or similar).
  • Demonstrates ability to remain calm and withstand pressures.
  • Flexible to changes in routine and adapts quickly to changing situations.
  • Reliable and responsible attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrates respect and courtesy to peers and visitors and assists fellow workers willingly.
  • Avoid speaking ill of the district and district personnel.
  • Frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping.
  • Frequent talking, hearing, and seeing.
  • Use of repetitive motions.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving at least 50 pounds of materials or children.
  • Frequent de-escalation of physical aggression, including the use of safe, non-harmful physical restraint procedures.
  • Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse.
  • Occasional reaching.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction to students under the supervision of a teacher.
  • Conduct instructional exercises, working with individual students or small groups.
  • Assist with classroom management and conduct parent involvement activities.
  • Help prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom and assist with equipment inventory, care, and maintenance.
  • Help the teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Supervise students before, during, and after school, including during bus loading/unloading, playground, cafeteria, and learning environments.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, and positioning.
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Help manage student behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
  • Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Participate in staff development training programs.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
