AI Software Engineering Intern

About The Position

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is seeking a motivated, self-driven intern to help build software for major retail customers. The team is moving customers from legacy store systems to a modern technology platform, including back-office web applications, store-service interfaces, and in-store and mobile applications. AI is central to both the features developed and the software development workflow.

The intern will contribute to a Spring 2027 retail project, potentially involving an in-store associate application or customer-facing mobile experience. Work may include prototyping AI-powered features, using AI coding assistants, improving CI/CD pipelines, modernizing back-office applications, developing Vue interfaces and Java services, and supporting mobile and in-store device applications. The role requires collaboration with engineers and stakeholders as well as independence in learning and solving problems.

This internship is based at the Frisco, Texas location and requires on-site work at least one day per week; two in-person days are preferred. The expected program dates are January 19 through April 23, 2027, with anticipated working hours of 15–30 per week. Final hours and schedule will be determined by the intern and manager. Visa sponsorship is not available now or in the future.

Requirements

• Must be able to work on-site at the Frisco, Texas location at least one day per week.
• Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Understanding of AI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or OpenAI tools.
• Understanding of large language models, including how they work, prompt engineering, and their strengths and limitations in AI-powered applications.
• Programming knowledge in Java and/or JavaScript.
• Solid understanding of Vue.js or a similar front-end framework such as React or Angular.
• Understanding of web application fundamentals, including front end, back end, and how they connect through APIs.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks, and figure things out with minimal direction.
• Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies quickly through hands-on work.
• Must be able to work without current or future visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

• Experience building Java back-end services or REST APIs.
• Familiarity with agentic AI, including AI agents that plan and carry out multi-step tasks.
• Understanding of Git, including branching, merging, and pull request workflows.
• Familiarity with the software development lifecycle and Agile practices.
• Experience writing unit, integration, or automated tests.
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and build or deployment tools.
• Interest in retail technology and point-of-sale systems.
• Ability to work in person two days per week is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to a Spring 2027 retail project, such as an in-store application for associates or a customer-facing mobile experience.
• Develop and prototype AI-powered features for retail applications, such as natural-language search, smart form validation, intelligent data entry, and automated data extraction.
• Use AI coding assistants such as Claude or Codex to write, refactor, debug, and document code, and to learn unfamiliar codebases and technologies.
• Help build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines, including exploring ways to incorporate AI into build, test, and review processes.
• Help modernize back-office web applications used to manage store data and day-to-day operations.
• Assist with building and enhancing user interfaces using Vue and developing or updating Java back-end services.
• Support mobile and in-store device application development as store technology advances toward rollout.
• Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to understand requirements, ask questions, and independently find solutions.
