About The Position

CAS is seeking a part-time PhD student for a 6-month placement at its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. This position is ideal for PhD students in chemical, biological, biomedical, physical, and materials sciences who are interested in applying AI methods to solve complex scientific problems. The role involves contributing to innovation and discovery efforts aligned with the CAS product portfolio and the student's scientific expertise, under the guidance of a CAS technical expert. The goal is to advance AI for science.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a PhD in a relevant discipline, such as chemistry, biology, biomedical science, physics, materials science, or cheminformatics
  • Strong interest in applying AI and machine learning methods to problems across the sciences
  • Experience with Python or R, and SQL
  • Ability to work through ambiguous technical problems with guidance from CAS mentors
  • Demonstrated analytical, multi-tasking, problem solving, and planning skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing
  • Ability to work effectively in an open, agile environment as well as independently
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require work authorization sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with chemistry, life science, and/or materials science data preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to innovation and discovery efforts in AI for science
  • Conduct literature review and technical landscape analysis in the assigned problem area
  • Contribute to the design, build, and iteration of prototypes or models
  • Validate outputs and findings with CAS domain experts
  • Document methodology, results, and recommendations in a formal technical report
  • Present findings to the CAS technical team
  • Perform other duties as assigned
