About The Position

Optum AI is UnitedHealth Group’s enterprise AI team, comprised of AI/ML scientists and engineers with deep expertise in AI/ML engineering for healthcare. We develop AI/ML solutions for high-impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses, including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. Our charter includes transforming the healthcare journey through responsible AI/ML innovation and developing/supporting an enterprise AI/ML development platform. Team members have the opportunity to make an impact at scale due to the data and resources available, engage in ground-breaking work with cutting-edge ML, NLP, and LLM techniques, and partner with world-class experts to develop novel AI/ML solutions, potentially leading to patents and publications. We are working in a critical frontier of AI/ML research and development.

Requirements

Master degree in computer science, Machine Learning, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or another STEM discipline
3+ years of DL frameworks such as PyTorch and/or TensorFlow
2+ years of experience using ML to solve problems in natural language processing (NLP), multimodal RT processing, and/or other AI domains
2+ years of experience in Generative AI, grounding architectures, fine-tuning LLMs and/or improving pre-train LLM’s performance
2+ years of developing machine learning applications
1+ year of solid agentic research and developing experience

Nice To Haves

Ph.D. in Machine Learning with focus on NLP and/or GenAI
Experience with Advanced Deep Learning, applied math and statistics
Proven solid technical and scientific knowledge about generative AI

Responsibilities

Developing new solutions and science best practices in Responsible AI
Developing and implementing models and methods that extend and improve LLM capabilities and reliability
Research, design and implement scalable machine learning solutions
Developing our research and innovation agenda
Design, implement and deploy Deep Learning models, RAG and LLMs
Collaborating with the Optum AI team and fellow scientist and engineers
