About The Position

As an AI Engineering Intern on Patagonia’s AI team, you’ll play a hands-on role in shaping how cutting-edge technology supports our mission. You’ll work alongside a small, high-impact team exploring and deploying advanced AI solutions across apparel, retail, and emerging business lines. This is not a theoretical or research-only role—you’ll contribute to real-world applications of AI that directly influence how Patagonia operates. You will have the opportunity to rapidly prototype, experiment, and help deploy production-grade solutions while learning how AI can be applied responsibly within a purpose-driven company. You’ll work across a range of domains including personalization, merchandising, supply chain, customer experience, and internal productivity—helping unlock new ways for Patagonia to better serve both customers and the planet.

Requirements

  • Experience in building AI and/or machine learning solutions (beyond LLM prompting, i.e. ChatGPT)
  • Academic or work background in data analytics and/or data engineering
  • Strong analytics experience (insights extraction from data source)
  • Experience with Python, R and Microsoft platforms preferred
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or R
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts and frameworks
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a small, fast-moving team
  • Strong problem-solving skills and curiosity

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with LLMs, generative AI, or agent-based systems
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms or AI tooling ecosystems (Azure, OpenAI, etc.)
  • Interest in retail, apparel, or supply chain systems
  • Exposure to data engineering, pipelines, or experimentation frameworks
  • Prior project work demonstrating applied AI solutions

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and iterate on machine learning and AI-driven solutions using Python, R, or similar tools
  • Develop and experiment with agentic AI systems that assist workflows and automate decision-making
  • Leverage platforms such as Microsoft Copilot Studio, Claude Projects, or other emerging AI tools to prototype intelligent systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with partners in merchandising, digital, supply chain, and operations
  • Contribute to production use cases—not just prototypes—with opportunities to see your work go live
  • Analyze datasets and translate insights into actionable AI-driven solutions
  • Present concepts, prototypes, and outcomes to Patagonia stakeholders, including senior leadership
  • Participate in discussions on responsible AI practices, ethics, and governance within a values-led organization
