About The Position

United Risk is hiring an AI Engineer for application development. The AI team builds tools for underwriters and operations staff, including submission ingestion, underwriting workbenches, risk analysis, and back- and middle-office automation. Its goal is to deliver tailored solutions that improve efficiency while maintaining security and compliance standards.

The role is part of a small AI engineering group and involves working directly with underwriters and operations staff to adapt existing products and build new applications and workflows. The position focuses on designing and shipping AI-powered applications used in day-to-day work; team members also contribute to data and infrastructure. Three senior AI engineers review the engineer’s work and provide guidance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field.
• 0–4 years of experience, including internships and co-ops.
• Strong Python skills and working knowledge of SQL.
• Hands-on full-stack development experience.
• Be able to show work you built yourself, such as a full-stack AI application, document-processing or structured-extraction tool, agentic workflow or tool integration, or an application with a human review or approval process.
• Curiosity about how the business operates and patience to learn insurance from knowledgeable colleagues.
• Clear communication with non-technical colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with underwriters and operations staff to understand their needs.
• Adapt existing products and build new products where existing solutions do not fit.
• Design and ship AI-powered applications and workflows for everyday use.
• Contribute to data and infrastructure work.
• Present a project you built and explain the choices made if shortlisted.
