AI Engineer

About The Position

As an AI Engineer at PowerPlan, you will be one of the first engineers on the Applied AI team, working as an in-house forward-deployed engineer with end-to-end ownership of AI solutions—from learning about a department’s work to delivering tools its employees use regularly. You will embed with teams across the company, including customer support, professional services, finance, and sales, and build solutions with significant autonomy. The role reports to the VP of Strategic Initiatives, whose group works closely with PowerPlan’s executive leadership team on company priorities. You will help establish a new team and bring the same standard of accuracy PowerPlan provides its utility customers to the company’s internal operations. Success will be measured by the number of solutions adopted for weekly use, their measurable impact, and whether departments can operate and modify the tools independently. Milestones include embedding with a department and establishing a problem statement and baseline in the first 30 days; getting a first solution into weekly pilot use by the end of the first quarter; and expanding to multiple solutions across departments over the first year. You will help establish team practices for building with AI, maintaining shared work, and testing quality and robustness; redesign workflows with the people who operate them; create reusable agent skills and workflow patterns; and equip departments with runbooks, training, and the ability to maintain their tools. This is a hybrid role based in Atlanta, with at least three days per week in the office. Onsite work may also be required for scheduled office days, team or client meetings, and special events.

Requirements

  • Two to four years of professional experience building or shipping software products in an engineering, product management, or similar role; alternatively, a related master’s degree and at least one year of that experience.
  • Experience shipping software or a product that others rely on, with the ability to explain what was built, why, and what changed after people used it.
  • Systems thinking and first-principles reasoning, including the ability to show a process that was changed rather than merely accelerated.
  • Ability to turn conversations with subject-matter experts into a clear problem statement and a way to measure success.
  • Experience using agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode as a default way of working, including planning, directing the tools, and checking their output.
  • Ability to write working Python or JavaScript, or build working software with agentic coding tools, and use SQL and APIs.
  • Ability to explain tradeoffs clearly and teach others to change a tool themselves.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, industrial or systems engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Based in Atlanta and able to work in the office at least three days per week.
  • Authorized to work in the United States; the role is not eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • A minor or coursework in business, economics, or finance, or experience in or alongside finance, accounting, professional services, or customer support.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping.
  • Experience automating workflows inside business systems or building agent skills, MCP connections, or other reusable components for AI tools.
  • A related master’s degree, such as in computer science, information systems, data science, or business analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Embed with departments, learn how their work is performed, and establish a clear problem statement, measured baseline, and real examples before building.
  • Build and deliver AI solutions end to end, with success measured by weekly adoption and measurable results.
  • Help develop team standards for building with AI tools, maintaining shared work, and testing quality and robustness.
  • Get an initial solution into weekly pilot use by the end of the first quarter and measure time saved against the baseline.
  • Grow solutions into weekly use across multiple departments, including larger cross-department builds with the team’s AI data engineer.
  • Redesign workflows in collaboration with the people who run them, using agentic coding tools as the default way of building.
  • Provide runbooks and training so departments can run and modify delivered tools independently.
  • Publish reusable agent skills and workflow patterns, develop them into a company library, and help define when AI output requires human review.
