About The Position

The AI Engineer III – Agentic AI is a hands-on engineering role contributing to production agentic AI systems that operate on financial data and serve customers. The engineer works with experienced engineers, product managers, and designers to design, build, ship, and operate AI-powered features in a regulated, customer-facing environment, with mentorship and guidance from senior engineers. The role focuses on agentic AI systems that plan, reason, and act across complex workflows, as well as LLM-powered product features, retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, and shared AI infrastructure. Systems are expected to meet financial-services standards for security, explainability, reliability, compliance, and auditability. The Enterprise Data & AI Team builds platforms, products, and governance that support responsible enterprise AI experimentation, deployment, and operation. The position is intended for an engineer with 3 to 5+ years of software development experience and a record of building data-driven products. It requires proficiency in Python for ML/AI and/or Java, experience with AI/ML tools and LLM engineering, APIs and services, and distributed systems. A BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar discipline is specified. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; American Express will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.

  • Experience with REST and gRPC APIs and services.
  • Experience with distributed systems and event-driven architectures, including Kafka.
  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Demonstrated responsible, hands-on use of Claude and Codex for code generation, review, testing, and documentation, with validation for security, reliability, and correctness.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; American Express will not pursue visa sponsorship.

  • Contribute to shared AI infrastructure, including LLM services, orchestration components, and evaluation or monitoring tooling.
  • Participate in operating AI systems in production, including monitoring, debugging, and improving reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with product and design partners to translate customer needs into technical solutions.
  • Write production code, contribute to system design discussions, and help operate systems after launch.
  • Use AI coding assistants responsibly to accelerate code generation, review, testing, and documentation, while validating outputs for security, reliability, and correctness.
