About The Position

This internship focuses on advancing the state-of-the-art in autonomous systems, uncrewed air platforms, artificial intelligence, software design, embedded systems, virtual reality, and simulation. The role involves applying skills to conceive, design, prototype, and test new capabilities in intelligent autonomous systems. The position is within the Intelligent Combat Platforms Group at APL, which focuses on ensuring the Nation maintains an operational advantage on the future battlefield through advances in AI, autonomy, manned-unmanned teaming, and novel unmanned aircraft design and testing. The group is developing the intelligence for autonomous wingmen behaviors, integrated real-time collaboration tools, data analytic architectures, and novel AI design tools and software. The team is entrepreneurial, multidisciplinary, and committed to developing technical talent, cultivating innovation and collaboration, and having fun. Possible roles include working on collaborative teams in software/hardware design, flight system test and evaluation, and next-generation autonomous air platforms; prototyping and simulating AI and autonomous systems by writing code, developing software, creating algorithms, or interfacing software/hardware; contributing to all facets of the data-to-deployment lifecycle of machine learning models; and collaborating with experts in intelligent combat systems and working with a team of engineers, scientists, and software developers.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in a STEM (Math, Computer Science, Physics, and/or Engineering or related area) field.
  • Classroom or professional experience working with core skills: autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, deep/reinforcement/machine learning, robotics, dynamics and controls, flight test and evaluation, modeling and simulation, aerodynamics, air combat platform design, data science, and statistical analysis.
  • Strong communication skills and can work and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Able to obtain an Secret-level security clearance by your start date.
  • U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in programming languages and environments (Python, C++, C, C#, Java, Linux Javascript, Terminal, Bash, Pytorch, tensorflow, Unity, MATLAB).
  • Full stack development experience.
  • Simulation development experience.
  • Cloud computing experience.
  • Configuration management experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing, prototyping, and designing mechanical systems such as machine shop and fabrication with CNC mills and 3D printing.
  • Experience working with sensors, hardware, or flight test support.
  • An uncrewed aerial system (UAS) tinkerer, enthusiast, and hobbyist with piloting experience.
  • Completed any certifications or internships.
  • Hold an active secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Work on collaborative teams in one or more areas: software/hardware design, flight system test and evaluation, and next generation autonomous air platforms.
  • Prototype and simulate AI and autonomous systems by writing code, developing software (simulation and visualization), creating algorithms, or interfacing software/hardware.
  • Contribute to all facets of the data-to-deployment lifecycle of machine learning models.
  • Collaborate with the nation’s leading experts in intelligent combat systems and work with a team of engineers, scientists, and software developers to deliver impactful capability to the warfighter.
