About The Position

MGK has 100+ years' of experience focusing on sustainable & environmentally conscious ways to protect families and crops from pests around the world, using our synthetic and certified organic, botanically based pesticide products. The Agronomy R&D Intern will be an integral part of MGK’s University of Minnesota research program, focusing on the testing and breeding of pyrethrum and other botanicals. This role provides an exceptional learning opportunity, involving participation in a cross-functional team both at the University and at MGK's corporate office. The position is ideal for a self-motivated individual who is capable of working conscientiously and independently while meeting project objectives and deadlines. The intern will be primarily engaged in early plant improvement initiatives, applying basic plant breeding concepts within a cross-disciplinary context to gain insights into a typical plant-breeding pipeline. This is a full-time, paid internship based out of our Brooklyn Park office, with weekly commuting to the University of Minnesota campus. The role pays $20/hour and will run from May 26 through August 14, with some flexibility on dates depending on availability. Program Requirements Reliable personal transportation is required. Housing is not provided. This internship does not include a housing stipend or housing assistance. This internship is full-time and primarily onsite, based in Brooklyn Park and/or at the University of Minnesota campus.

Requirements

  • Pursuing or completion of a BA/BS or graduate degree in a plant science related field.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience in chemistry, plant science, or related laboratory techniques; comfort with repetitive, detail-oriented lab work
  • Demonstrated multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Effective communication both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the MS Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).

Nice To Haves

  • Training in greenhouse management, field management, bioinformatics, plant genetics, agronomy, and experimental design.

Responsibilities

  • Support MGK’s University of Minnesota R&D program.
  • Manage field maintenance and data collection for important MGK germplasm.
  • Draft trial plans, data sheets, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Process and organize data for research trials.
  • Support development and execution of research trial plans.
  • Support indoor cultivation and testing of MGK botanicals of interest.
  • Perform laboratory sample preparation and processing, including grinding, extraction, and organization of plant material
  • Support chemistry-based testing activities, requiring attention to detail and extended periods of bench work
  • Assist with fungicide residual testing and seed oil analysis under the guidance of senior staff
  • Present research and findings on a regular basis.
  • Perform other duties as requested by management
