About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Upper Mountain Research Station is hiring an Agricultural Technician II with growth potential for a fulfilling career in agriculture. Our mission is to serve as a platform for agricultural research to make farming more efficient, productive, and profitable, while maintaining a sound environment and providing consumers with safe and affordable products. Research is conducted on various crops including corn, small grains, pumpkins, Christmas trees and turfgrass. This position will also support animal agricultural production as seasonal demands may require.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of agricultural practices.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment.
  • Ability to properly mix and apply common agricultural chemicals.
  • Ability to use a variety of power and hand tools commonly used in equipment, facility and yard maintenance.
  • Physical ability to perform strenuous manual duties both inside and outside under adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (Non-Excepted Interstate) or qualify for certification within twelve months of employment.
  • Forklift Driver Certificate or qualify for certification within twelve months of employment.
  • Public Pesticide Applicator License or qualify for certification within twelve months of employment.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in the general care and management of animals or crops, or laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Selected applicants must obtain a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) medical certificate prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Routine tasks such as assisting with land preparation, planting, cultivating and harvesting various crops.
  • Operation and basic maintenance of farm equipment.
  • Work may include other duties as assigned.
