About The Position

The Nematode Assay Laboratory at the Agronomic Division in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) is pleased to announce the opening of an Agricultural Technician II Lead position. You will work in a fast-paced, team environment as a laboratory technician in the Nematode assay lab. The primary purpose of the position is to receive and prepare samples for microscopic assay, train temporary employees, and coordinate workflow.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of good laboratory and safety practices.
  • Ability to express technical information clearly, both orally and in writing, when reporting results and explaining procedures to others.
  • Ability to sustain attention to detail for long periods of time.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time using a microscope.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in the general care and management of animals or crops, or laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to lift trays and boxes weighing up to ~50 lbs.
  • Push heavy carts of soil
  • Operate a pallet jack and forklift (training provided)
  • Move pallets of sample boxes
  • Stand for extended periods of time

Responsibilities

  • Assisting clients with sample submissions
  • Checking in laboratory samples
  • Using a computer-based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to log samples
  • Extract nematodes from soil, roots, wood chips, foliage, or any other plant material for identification and counting.
