About The Position

Responsible for maintaining and repairing a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles. Work involves diagnosing problems and performing repairs and preventive maintenance on all types of sugar cane harvesting and related equipment. Types of equipment will depend on area of assignment - harvester and tractor; trailer; or truck shop. Work is performed under limited supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience and exercises some independent judgement to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of mechanical experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of agricultural equipment; OR a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.
  • Must possess and maintain a regular Class “E” Driver’s license
  • Must have own set of tools
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment mechanics
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and compliance standards related to equipment operation
  • Skill in using mathematics required for the work
  • Ability to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams

  • Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

  • Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity.
  • Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all tractors, sugar cane harvest equipment, and any other equipment in the Agriculture Department’s field and shop operations
  • Assists in the tire servicing of all types of equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, tractors and harvesting equipment
  • Repairs harvest equipment (e.g., cane elevators, cane harvesters, tractors, air compressors) and any equipment utilized in support of agriculture
  • Inspects and diagnoses equipment failure, performs timed repairs, and oversees the operation of numerous lifting devices, including proper rigging procedures
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment; maintains applicable service and repair logs
  • Utilizes standard shop hand tools, measuring devices, and equipment
  • Works collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to achieve project goals
  • Ensures the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Follows organizational and public safety guidelines and protocols, performs job functions in a safe manner, and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures
