About The Position

The Agricultural Animal Health Technician 3 works in support of the Office of the Attending Veterinarian and the agricultural animals used as a resource for research and teaching. This role supports the humane care of agricultural research and teaching animals and ensures regulatory compliance. The technician will support faculty, staff, and students with research projects requiring the use of animals such as poultry (turkey and chicken), swine, bovine, and other laboratory animals. They will work with research and farm personnel to facilitate and provide training for animal handling and sample collection, and maintain records of animal treatments and procedures as required by regulations for review by the OAV, USDA, AAALAC International, and Ohio State IACUC. The technician will report any issues involving animal care and welfare to the clinical veterinarian. For the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), this role assists veterinarians with the management of the agricultural veterinary clinic, orders veterinary and associated animal supplies for all statewide research and teaching farms, and maintains computer records of drug inventories and dispositions in compliance with regulations and for audits. They will clean and prepare surgical equipment, interact with personnel to supply and administer medications under veterinary guidance, and assist veterinarians with surgical procedures. The technician will operate sterilization equipment and travel to support on-farm clinical duties, diagnostic sample collections, animal observations, and record keeping review. They will run routine diagnostic tests on blood, milk, and fecal samples and complete documentation for regulatory compliance. This role also supports animal procurement and updates veterinary SOPs as requested. Additionally, the technician may assist or train IACUC approved students or personnel in sample collection, procedures, and animal handling. All activities are covered by IACUC and AAALAC regulatory guidance, and this role maintains documentation of all activities in accordance with regulatory requirements and responds to emergency building alarms as required. Weekend and holiday rotation may be required with opportunity for overtime pay.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Animal Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience working in agricultural animal setting.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience.
  • Current AALAS registration or certification.
  • Animal care experience and agricultural species handling experience (swine, poultry, ruminant) highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assists veterinarians with surgical procedures required for research projects, or for general clinical care.
  • Operates sterilization equipment in preparation for surgical procedures in agricultural animals.
  • Travels with clinical veterinarians or independently for direct support of on-farm clinical duties, for routine diagnostic sample collections, animal observations, record keeping review and other duties as assigned.
  • Runs routine diagnostic tests on blood, milk and fecal samples.
  • Completes documentation for regulatory compliance with the Farm SMPs, USDA, AAALAC International, OLAW/ NIH and OSU IACUC.
  • Supports animal procurement and updates veterinary SOPs (swine, poultry, rodent, rabbit, guinea pig, ferret) as requested in support of OAV.
  • Assists or trains IACUC approved students or personnel to collect samples or perform procedures as required for research and teaching.
  • Trains IACUC approved students or personnel in animal handling as requested to support research or teaching.
  • Maintains documentation of all activities in accordance with regulatory requirements and responds to emergency building alarms as required.
