About The Position

The Aggregates Safety Intern works alongside the Safety and Operations teams to support safety programs and initiatives across Capitol Aggregates' quarry and aggregate operations. This position provides hands-on experience in industrial safety through exposure to field inspections, hazard identification, safety training, incident prevention, regulatory compliance, and other activities designed to promote a safe working environment. The intern will spend time in active aggregate operations learning how safety principles are applied in the field and how Safety partners with Operations to identify risks and develop practical solutions. This internship is designed for a student interested in pursuing a career in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, industrial safety, or a related field who wants real-world experience in mining and heavy industrial operations.

Requirements

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately document observations, findings, and safety information.
Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with team members, supervisors, managers, and other business partners.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to work collaboratively with Safety, Operations, Maintenance, and other team members.
Willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced team members, and actively participate in safety discussions.
Commitment to safe work practices and willingness to learn applicable MSHA requirements.
Currently enrolled in a college or university degree program in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Safety, Safety Management, or a related field.
Interest in pursuing a career in workplace safety, industrial safety, mining safety, or a related field.
Ability and willingness to travel to Capitol Aggregates locations and spend significant time working in active quarry and aggregate production environments.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around heavy mobile equipment, processing equipment, dust, noise, and other conditions commonly found in aggregate operations.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in operational areas.
Willingness to participate in field inspections, safety observations, training activities, and other hands-on safety assignments.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in both field and office environments.
Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets Company requirements.
Commitment to following all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable MSHA regulations.

Nice To Haves

Previous work, internship, coursework, or exposure to safety, mining, construction, manufacturing, or another industrial environment is helpful but not required.
Interest in occupational safety, risk management, accident prevention, mining, or aggregate operations.

Responsibilities

Work alongside Safety and Operations personnel to support safety programs and initiatives across aggregate operations.
Participate in field safety inspections and observations to identify potential workplace hazards and unsafe conditions.
Assist with documenting safety observations, inspection findings, and recommended corrective actions.
Support follow-up activities to help ensure identified safety concerns are appropriately addressed.
Participate in jobsite and operational safety assessments involving mobile equipment, processing equipment, work areas, and other aspects of aggregate operations.
Assist with reviewing work practices and processes to identify opportunities to reduce workplace risks and improve safety.
Support incident and accident investigations by assisting with information gathering, documentation, identification of contributing factors, and corrective action follow-up.
Assist with safety training activities, including preparing materials, coordinating training, maintaining records, and participating in safety meetings.
Support new team member safety orientation and other required safety training activities.
Assist with maintaining accurate safety records, inspection documentation, training records, and other safety-related information.
Collect, organize, and assist with analyzing safety data to identify trends and opportunities for accident and injury prevention.
Participate in safety meetings and contribute ideas for improving safety practices and employee engagement.
Gain exposure to MSHA requirements and how regulatory standards are applied within quarry and aggregate operations.
Participate alongside Safety personnel during regulatory inspections and related follow-up activities as appropriate.
Assist with safety projects and initiatives focused on hazard prevention, risk reduction, and continuous improvement.
Visit aggregate locations and work directly with Safety and Operations personnel to better understand site-specific processes, equipment, and safety considerations.
Maintain assigned work areas and equipment in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
Follow all Company and site safety policies, rules, and procedures, as well as applicable MSHA regulations.
