About The Position

The Agency Attorney works under supervision, with some latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision. The role involves legal work related to investigating and prosecuting misconduct by uniformed employees of the New York City Police Department. Duties often include thoroughly reviewing investigative files, conducting legal research, and preparing legal memoranda for the Police Department’s executive staff, who make final determinations and adjudications. The position supports the Department Advocate's Office mission of ensuring and maintaining the integrity of the disciplinary process for Police Department members.

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• Either one year of satisfactory United States legal experience after admission to any state bar, or six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne.
• Remain a member of the New York State Bar in good standing throughout employment.
• For Assignment Level II: one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience after bar admission in areas related to the assignment.
• For Assignment Level III: two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience after bar admission in areas related to the assignment.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and prosecute misconduct by uniformed Police Department employees.
• Review investigative files thoroughly.
• Conduct legal research and prepare legal memoranda.
• Present memoranda to Police Department executive staff for final determination and adjudication.
