Harlem Grown is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. The organization operates local urban farms, increases access to healthy food in Harlem, and provides farm-based development programs for Harlem youth. Founded in 2011, Harlem Grown now operates 14 urban agricultural sites, including soil-based farms, hydroponic greenhouses, and a mushroom chamber, all located between 122nd and 152nd Streets in Central Harlem. Their programs focus on growing fresh food, strong youth, and lasting relationships, meeting children where they live and learn. Through Food and Farm Education, youth develop healthy habits, leadership skills, and a connection to their community. The organization provides free produce and nutritious meals, cooking lessons, and creates spaces for connection and support. They also aim to increase economic opportunity and develop leadership and advocacy skills in participants. Harlem Grown offers various programs including summer camp, in-school and after-school programs, mobile education, service learning, and farm tours. They also provide community resources like farmstands and events, and support young people through academic assistance, internships, and career readiness programs.
