About The Position

The Afterschool Counselor assists in the implementation of activities throughout the duration of the afterschool programs, holiday camps, summer camps, mobile recreation activities, enrichment, and any other activities related to youth development. Assists in the supervision of afterschool participants throughout the duration of all program activities. May be required to assist with other general Parks and Recreation duties assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age
  • Possess a minimum of six (6) months of related experience.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is required and will be provided through City-sponsored training.
  • Knowledge of youth programs, recreational activities, and age-appropriate engagement strategies.
  • Skills to interact positively and effectively with children of varying ages in structured and unstructured settings.
  • Skill to work cooperatively with supervisors, staff, and volunteers as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude while actively participating in youth activities.
  • Ability to follow supervisory direction, established procedures, and program guidelines.
  • Ability to comply with organizational standards, including dress code and conduct expectations.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Georgia driver’s license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the implementation of activities throughout the duration of the day, including arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, enrichment activities, and other programs related to youth development, including afterschool programs, holiday camps, summer camps, and mobile recreation activities at City events.
  • Supports program operations by assisting with activity schedules and coordination of field trips for camps and special programs, as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
  • Encourages and enforces proper conduct of participants, providing age-appropriate guidance and redirection to support a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all youth.
  • Communicates participant concerns or behavioral issues to the Program Coordinator or supervisory staff, as appropriate, rather than independently resolving parent or public complaints.
  • Makes innovative suggestions for programs, problem-solving, and addressing operational inefficiencies to enhance participant engagement and program effectiveness.
  • Adheres to all housekeeping and safety standards and ensures these standards are not violated by participants, including compliance with established safety procedures and CPR-related emergency response protocols.
  • Assumes other responsibilities within the scope of the position assigned by the Program Coordinator.

  • Performs other related duties as required.
