About The Position

The YMCA of Western North Carolina is seeking an Afterschool Counselor I to assist with the supervision of participants in their after-school program, serving children from kindergarten to 8th grade. The role involves leading activities that promote academic and social growth in a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment. Counselors will utilize provided resources to introduce new skills and enhance learning experiences. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the competencies, skills, and leadership abilities to support the YMCA's mission.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Must possess oral, auditory, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with children and adults.
  • Flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with children or teens preferred.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games, etc.
  • Multi-lingual desired.

  • Ensures the safety and engagement of all children in their assigned group, creating a secure and enjoyable environment.
  • Offers homework support and encourages academic progress, celebrating each child's achievements.
  • Follows program lesson plans thoughtfully, considering each child's unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs.
  • Cultivates a nurturing programming environment that encourages exploration, positive play, and embraces every child's individuality.
  • Maintains open and ongoing communication with their supervisor.
  • Keeps accurate classroom records as assigned, ensuring compliance with program standards.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, actively participating in designated parent and family events.
  • Models inclusive behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity, fostering an environment where every child feels valued and respected.
  • Adheres to all required policies of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the state, and federal regulations.
