About The Position

The Afterschool Aide coordinates student homework and tutoring sessions, plans recreational activities, and supervises and interacts with children during recreation. The role also maintains high cleaning standards at the afterschool site or recreation center and provides customer service to the public.

This is a part-time, temporary opportunity requiring availability Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., for approximately 15–20 hours per week. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a background screening and the GISD volunteer process, and hold a valid Class C Texas driver’s license.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience facilitating group games with children ages 5–12.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Must pass a background screening.
• Must pass the GISD volunteer process.
• Basic knowledge of a variety of recreation activities and the ability to organize them into activities.
• Basic knowledge of First Aid and CPR procedures.
• Basic knowledge of supervision procedures for activities and events.
• Basic skill in operating office equipment and a personal computer.
• Ability to work independently of the supervisor.
• Valid Class C Texas driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

• Six months to one year of experience in a recreation or sports facility.

Responsibilities

• Assist the public by phone or in person with information about programs, schedules, and related matters.
• Perform custodial and customer-service duties to keep the afterschool site or recreation center clean, orderly, and properly set up for events and activities.
• Assist with inventory control of equipment and supplies.
• Enforce and maintain City and Department policies, including explaining department rules and policies to customers.
• Facilitate group games for children ages 5–12.
• Lead groups of children through activities such as painting, playing, coloring, and singing.
• Maintain an accurate daily count of children in care.
• Assist with implementing scheduled daily activities.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.
