About The Position

The Afterschool Activity Specialist Assistant works in a before/afterschool/summer child care program. The Afterschool Activity Specialist Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Activity Specialist in the supervision and instruction of children (kindergarten-grade 12) in various enrichment and academic activities. The role involves performing routine functions to support daily operations, including daily attendance, instructional support, copying materials, greeting families and children, engaging in daily activities, and supporting student needs. A key aspect of the role is providing a safe, caring, and engaged environment, maintaining close proximity to students at all times, and participating in daily field trips which may involve walking or bus travel. The position requires the ability to walk 2 miles daily during program hours and adhere to local policies and procedures. The Assistant will foster healthy relationships among children, provide positive role modeling, and maintain strict confidentiality of student information.

Requirements

  • Be sixteen years of age
  • Work under the supervision of Afterschool Activities Specialist or Afterschool Program Staff
  • 1 year from start date to complete Vermont Afterschool Foundations Certificate
  • Enthusiasm, responsibility and willingness to learn
  • CPR-First Aid Certified or have 3 months to complete
  • Strong customer service and public relations skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Time management, organizational, prioritization, and problem-recognition skills.
  • Strong success working with youth of all ages.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to understand both written and oral instructions
  • Ability to make independent judgments
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job in accordance with federal, state, and Springfield School District requirements.
  • Knowledge of CDD Regulations and STARS regulatory review process and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine functions to support daily operations including, daily attendance, instructional support, copying of materials for clubs or groups, greeting families and children daily, engaging in daily activities and supporting student needs

  • Provide daily assistance on various field trips; walking or bus.
  • Follow local policy and procedures in the area of educational requirements and building level operations
  • Participate in required in-service training programs and complete professional pre hours for DCC and STARS regulations

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student information, providing information to parent, teachers, and other on a “need to know” basis only.
