About The Position

The Aftercare Teacher supervises and engages JDS students during the after-school aftercare program, providing a warm, safe, and active environment from school dismissal through pick-up. The Aftercare Teacher leads age-appropriate activities, supports homework time, supervises snack and free play, and partners with families during pick-up. This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a daily schedule concentrated in the afternoon.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience working with school-aged children (camp, aftercare, classroom, youth programming, or similar)
  • Ability to complete required background checks and any state-mandated clearances for school staff
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness and ability to obtain prior to start date
  • Patience, warmth, and genuine enjoyment of working with school-aged children across age groups
  • Strong supervision and classroom-management skills in a less-structured (after-school) setting
  • Reliability and punctuality — ability to be on schedule for every aftercare shift
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with children, families, and colleagues
  • Flexibility and creativity in planning and leading aftercare activities
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of professional practice
  • Able to work in a small shop with a sense of humor
  • Ability to keep information in the strictest of confidence
  • Proficient at working in a Microsoft Windows environment, using Office; ability to master common automated systems for record keeping, and confidently learn new technology
  • Ability to talk on the phone
  • Ability to stand multiple hours of the day
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work outside in any weather

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, ideally in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field
  • Prior experience in aftercare, summer camp, or extended-day programming
  • Experience in a Jewish day school or familiarity with Jewish life and traditions

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students from school dismissal through aftercare pick-up, ensuring all children are accounted for at all times.
  • Lead age-appropriate activities, games, crafts, and outdoor play that engage students and support a positive aftercare experience.
  • Support a homework or quiet-work time as part of the aftercare schedule, helping students stay on task as needed.
  • Manage transitions between activities, snack, free play, and pick-up smoothly and safely.
  • Foster a warm, inclusive aftercare community across age groups.
  • Supervise snack time and ensure adherence to food-allergy and dietary protocols in coordination with school records.
  • Follow all school policies for student supervision, sign-out, and authorized pick-up.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance and sign-out records for aftercare.
  • Respond appropriately to minor injuries, illnesses, and behavioral situations in accordance with school policy; communicate with families and the appropriate school staff as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized aftercare space, including indoor and outdoor areas.
  • Support emergency drills and follow established emergency protocols during aftercare hours.
  • Provide a warm, professional point of contact for families during aftercare pick-up.
  • Communicate with families about any aftercare-related concerns, incidents, or follow-ups in coordination with the appropriate school staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and any information learned in the course of duties.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and the front office about student-specific information relevant to aftercare (e.g., pick-up changes, behavioral notes, health concerns).
  • Support seamless transitions from the school day into aftercare programming.
  • Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
  • Actively participates in the full life of the school
  • Vigorously engages in professional development; demonstrates a commitment to life-long learning by enhancing their skills, and embracing innovative technologies and creative thinking
  • Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities
