About The Position

The Aftercare Counselor, Team Leader is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of Early Childhood Center (ECC) students in grades Pre-Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten, Brookside students in Senior Kindergarten through 5th grade, or Middle School students in 6th through 8th grade. Cranbrook Schools' Aftercare program is an extension of the Cranbrook Schools learning environment: it is a time for students to make decisions about completing homework, to participate in craft projects, play, work in groups, and to wind-down their academic day before they return to their families. Responsibilities include management of students, oversee sign-in and sign-out activity, monitor use of materials and playground equipment, work and play with the students indoors and outdoors, attend to minor first aid needs, communicate with parents, Aftercare Supervisor/Program Administrator, and School administration. The work schedule follows the Cranbrook Schools Calendar.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year professional training or practical experience in the field of primary school education or childcare.
  • Maintenance of current CPR/First Aid training.
  • Must be able to relate well to children and team members.
  • Responsibilities must be fulfilled in accordance with Cranbrook Schools philosophy.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the daily program under the direction of the Aftercare Supervisor/Program Administrator and Director of Special & Summer Programs.
  • Prepare the materials, supplies, and set-up of the learning environment.
  • Administer use of Procare to Sign-In Students and correspond with Parents.
  • Share responsibility for the ordered arrangement of the learning environment and general housekeeping responsibilities.
  • Maintain daily records of student arrivals and departures and daily records of enrichment activities.
  • Complete and/or review Incident/Behavior reports for incidents that occur during program hours.
  • Review and retain up-to-date knowledge of any student(s) allergies, medical conditions, or pertinent information regarding mental/emotional health (in accordance with the school counselor).
  • Assist with preparation and implementation of daily snacks.
  • Participate in set-up and clean-up of Aftercare spaces each day.
  • Lead Aftercare Counselors who are assigned to the supervised program areas.
  • Share arrival, dismissal and playground supervision.
  • Sharing duties related to moving students safely from one area or building to another.
  • Arrange sport activities for students that are appropriate to the season and available spaces, including setting up and putting away athletic equipment.
  • Treat children and their parents with dignity and respect, maintain positive discipline through the use of nonjudgmental language and tone of voice.
  • Help children become aware of their roles as integral members of a group.
  • Maintain open and positive communication between team members.
  • Maintain an overall awareness and appreciation for the needs of the children.
  • Maintain current CPR/First Aid training.
  • Maintain attendance, punctuality, and performance standards set forth in Cranbrook’s employee handbook.
  • Assists Special and Summer Programs Program Administrator/Aftercare Supervisor supervise Aftercare Counselors, including the completion of the Performance Annual Reviews.
  • Team Leader is responsible for contacting the Program Administrator/Aftercare Supervisor to communicate problems at the After School site for Supervisor’s attention, including staff absences, equipment needs, and parent or student problems.
