About The Position

As an Aftercare Counselor and Lifeguard at Sagemont Preparatory School, you will support the school-year aftercare program while also serving as a certified lifeguard to help maintain required supervision ratios during pool activities. This unique role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, prioritizes safety, and can help create a positive, structured, and engaging environment for students beyond the regular school day. The Aftercare Counselor and Lifeguard will supervise students during after-school activities, support transitions, assist with homework and enrichment, and maintain active supervision during pool use. This position plays an important role in ensuring students are safe, supported, and engaged during indoor, outdoor, and aquatic activities. Hours: Monday – Friday, school-year schedule

Requirements

  • Current Lifeguard certification, such as American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent, including CPR/AED and First Aid.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Strong attention to safety, situational awareness, and sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to actively supervise students in both structured and unstructured settings.
  • Positive, energetic, patient, and professional demeanor.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and families.
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to maintain professionalism in an active school environment.
  • Ability to meet all applicable Florida school background screening requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous lifeguarding experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children in a school, camp, recreational, or aftercare setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain active supervision of students during aftercare, including indoor activities, outdoor play, transitions, and pool time.
  • Serve as the certified lifeguard during scheduled pool activities to support safety requirements and maintain appropriate supervision ratios.
  • Enforce pool rules and respond quickly and effectively to any safety concerns or emergencies.
  • Rotate through standing, sitting, and walking positions during pool supervision to maintain visibility and alertness.
  • Conduct pool and safety checks as needed to help ensure a clean, safe, and well-supervised aquatic environment.
  • Assist students with homework, educational activities, and structured after-school programming.
  • Plan and facilitate engaging after-school activities, including arts and crafts, games, outdoor play, and other enrichment opportunities.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support a positive student experience and ensure consistent supervision throughout the program.
  • Support general aftercare operations, including attendance, student transitions, activity setup, cleanup, and communication with the school team.
  • Create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where students feel supported and respected.
  • Serve as a positive role model through professionalism, patience, teamwork, and active engagement.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
