About The Position

The After School Leader is responsible for the general supervision of youth and teens. This role involves planning and implementing a variety of activities, including physical activities, nutrition education, academic enrichment, homework assistance, and light tutoring. Due to state-mandated supervision and ratio requirements, this position does not offer the option to work from home during program operational hours.

Requirements

  • Certified in CPR and First Aid (or be certified within 30 days of hire).
  • Complete YMCA child abuse prevention within 30 days of hire.
  • Provide proof of negative tuberculosis test within the last calendar year (then valid for up to 4 years).
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • 48 semester college units required or successful completion of an alternative placement plan identified by the district the individual is assigned.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working with youth and/or teens.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by knowing their locations at all times, making them aware of and enforcing safety regulations, applying appropriate behavior management techniques, and maintaining program equipment and facilities.
  • Assist children with school-directed virtual learning.
  • Implement group activity plans by preparing materials, activities, and environments.
  • Consistently demonstrate positive interaction with all children, talking to them and treating them with dignity and respect to help them develop positive self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Adhere to all processes, procedures, rules, and regulations of the YMCA, licensing, Public Health Department, and school district.
  • Positively identify individuals picking up children before releasing them.
  • Identify emergency situations and respond quickly and appropriately.
  • Consistently demonstrate positive discipline by teaching and redirecting rather than scolding or reprimanding, and by firmly and consistently enforcing rules.
  • Introduce yourself to parents and teachers, and communicate with them regularly with confidence regarding accurate program information, such as schedule changes and permission slips.
  • Clean, disinfect, and tidy areas used by the program as needed.
  • Follow all YMCA policies for working with youth and vulnerable adults.
  • Complete required abuse prevention training.
  • Supervise high-risk activities responsibly and report any unsafe or inappropriate behavior.
  • Follow mandated reporting laws for suspected abuse.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
