Aerothermal Engineer

Rolls-RoyceIndianapolis, IN
$94,160 - $153,010Hybrid

About The Position

Rolls-Royce is seeking an Aerothermal Engineer to design, analyze, and simulate various gas turbine system components and sub-systems. This role involves working with performance organizations and system-level design to define requirements, issue performance maps, and collaborate with aeromechanics, heat transfer, and mechanical design teams. The engineer will also plan and oversee component testing, interpret simulation and experimental results, and contribute to capability acquisition through methods, coding, and technology plans. Continuous improvement through best practices, process automation, and waste elimination is also a key aspect of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 2+ years of experience in mechanical design or control systems, OR Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, OR JD/PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Exceptional people and communication skills.
  • Familiarity using computer aided design tools such as NX.
  • Proficient with aerodynamics, turbomachinery, airfoil design, and computation fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Competent with gas turbine engine architecture, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Communicates aerothermal concepts clearly and succinctly with appropriate technical depth to variety of audiences.
  • Works well in a collaborative, multidisciplinary, product focused team.
  • Has a wide awareness of engineering issues & requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and simulate various gas turbine system components and sub-systems using a variety of methodologies, including meanline, throughflow, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Work with performance organization and system level design to define, understand, and interpret sub-system requirements and issue sub-system performance maps and bids.
  • Work with aeromechanics, heat transfer, and mechanical design communities to understand interface with aerodynamic design.
  • Plan, execute, and oversee component and sub-system “rig” tests for product development and/or technology development.
  • Assemble, interpret, and report a combination of CFD simulations, experimental results, and first principle analyses into a cohesive understanding of component and sub-system capabilities as measured against requirements.
  • Support the wider aerodynamics disciplines with capability acquisition via methods and coding, technology plans, and collaborating in the communities of practice.
  • Practice continuous improvement principles by using and updating best practices, process automation, and eliminating wasteful process steps.
