The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. Role Overview: Are you ready to transform the way we reach space? Blue Origin’s National Security division is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join our Core Systems and Components team. In this influential role, you will architect and deliver cutting-edge, mission-critical systems that empower U.S. government and defense initiatives. Working alongside world-class multidisciplinary teams, you’ll drive the development of resilient, scalable solutions for next-generation spacecraft and ground systems. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in systems engineering for aerospace or defense platforms.
  • Deep familiarity with electro-mechanical devices and control systems.
  • Proven ability to identify and mature technologies from outside the space market and adapt them for flight applications.
  • Systems Engineering experience across multidisciplinary domains for space, including electronics, software, FPGA, magnetics, controls, and mechanical engineering.
  • Proven success in applying Design-for-X principles (Cost, Production, Testability, etc.) in system development.
  • Experience integrating rapid, iterative development processes with hardware-centric systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency throughout the full systems engineering lifecycle, with emphasis on system architecture, formulation, and balancing requirements.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD, NASA standards).
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering tools and practices.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence collaboration tools.
  • Strong desire to leverage AI tools in daily work and in the systems engineering process.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in relevant engineering discipline.
  • Familiarity with software-hardware co-design in mission-critical systems.
  • Experience with system reliability and sustainment engineering.
  • Experience with Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) components, such as sensors, actuators, or flight algorithms.
  • Hands-on experience with reaction wheels or other spacecraft attitude control subsystems.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical development, integration, and validation of spacecraft/ground system architectures and subsystems.
  • Develop system requirements, interface definitions, and verification plans.
  • Drive the end-to-end systems engineering lifecycle: concept, risk analysis, trade studies, design, test, and delivery.
  • Interface with government customers and internal stakeholders to capture mission needs and translate them into actionable system requirements.
  • Serve as technical mentor for junior engineers, fostering growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Identify, mitigate, and track risks across system design and integration.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, documentation, and status reports.
  • Support proposal development and technology road mapping for future systems.
