Our employees are not only part of history, they’re making history. Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Staff Aeronautical Engineer. This position is located in Roy, UT and supports the Sentinel program.

Requirements

  • 12 Years with Bachelors in Science; 10 Years with Masters; 8 Years with PhD.
  • Active In Scope DoD Secret Security Clearance with a re-investigation within 6 years
  • B.S. in Related Engineering Field
  • Deep understanding of fluid dynamics principles, aerodynamic theory, and numerical methods used in various types of simulation (Subsonic, supersonic, hypersonic, and rarefied flow.)
  • Deep understanding of turbulence models, relaxation factors, CFL number, and other CFD parameters to ensure simulation is correct.
  • 10 years of experience with commercial CFD codes such as CFD++, StarCCM+, or ANSYS Fluent including meshing, running cases, and post processing results in Tecplot
  • 4 years’ experience leading and mentoring a CFD team
  • Experience writing CDRLs, and formal reports for the customer
  • Experience using CAD software to clean up geometry for CFD
  • Demonstrated technical writing experience in both authoring and reviewing formal analysis documentation
  • Strong understanding of HPC and how they operate
  • Experience of how to use CFD for design changes to solve ICBM problems
  • Creation of run matrix for CFD cases
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Understanding of ablation, boundary layer transition, acoustics, plasma and other complex reacting flow phenomenon.
  • 1 year of experience developing aerodynamic models, tools, databases using Matlab, Python, C++ or similar for integration into 3/6DOF simulations.
  • 1 year of experience with analytical aerodynamic design tools, e.g. Missile DATCOM or similar.
  • Experience analyzing wind tunnel test data and flight test results for verification and validation of models.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Linux and Windows based HPC's for aero/fluids work.
  • Involvement with the planning and execution of physical aerodynamics related testing applications such as wind tunnels or flight test validation including scheduling, test matrix and development of test items.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Prior exposure to defense projects or working within regulated environments is highly desirable.
  • DoD Top Secret Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor junior engineers in the CFD design process to ensure high quality technical results while meeting program schedule.
  • Regularly attend and be actively involved in customer meetings and Sr. Leadership meetings as an aero/fluids technical Subject Matter Expert.
  • Conduct high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to accurately predict missile aerodynamic performance under various flight regimes.
  • All aspects of the CFD process which include: cleaning up geometry, making meshes, setting up boundary conditions, monitoring solution convergence and post processes results.
  • Ensure the quality of Aero/Fluids team products meets the technical excellence standards.
  • Collaborate closely with other relevant disciplines/IPTs, e.g. Flight Analysis, Structures, Propulsion, Integration and test, etc.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly; present technical approaches and findings to customers, executive management, and other program stakeholders.
