About The Position

The AE Defense – Component Design Engineer Transmissions & Structures is responsible for the Mechanical Design of components for Gas Turbine Engines, principally Gears, gearboxes, shafts, structures and supporting mechanical hardware. The Design Engineer is also responsible for the creation of design definitions that meets the given sub-system requirements and product attributes. The Design Engineer shall create solutions that are robust against variation, taking into account the appropriate form, fit, and function. The Design Engineer shall exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing engineering, cost engineering and product definition. This role will be applying the latest design methods, tools and techniques to support the design needs of the AE Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 1+ years of experience in design engineering OR; Master’s degree in Engineering with 0 years of experience in design engineering OR; PhD in Engineering with 0 years of experience in design engineering
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain security clearance, which requires US Citizenship

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with gas turbines
  • Experience with PCB process
  • Orchestrate Design Technical Reviews (DTA) and communicate solutions to the project/customer
  • Create hardware design concepts and perform trade studies to optimize hardware for gears, shafting, structures, sumps and bearings
  • Experience with ANSYS Workbench for quick component level assessments
  • Experience with compressor component design methods and practices
  • Experience working with Siemens NX and/or Teamcenter
  • Experience with GD&T
  • Experience with computer programming and design optimization

Responsibilities

  • Operate as part of a broader AE Design team that will stretch the designer to apply their skills to components beyond the immediate needs of the gearbox mechanicals, including but not limited to externals (brackets, tubes, harnesses, etc.), gearbox structures and lubrication systems.
  • Support of supply chain efforts to procure hardware from multiple suppliers including concession consultation and execution of DARs
  • Provide engineering support of development and/or service related hardware issues including engine Investigations and Technical Variance consultation
  • Deliver Design Solutions to the AE Program within the DTA Process, which includes (but is not limited to) preparing technical presentations and documents, creating design concepts, optimizing concepts to a final definition, supporting creation of drawings, delivering hardware for validation and release to the field.
  • Participate in or Lead Root Cause and Corrective Action teams
  • Hardware condition assessment following engine and/or rig testing, and documentation thereof
  • Interface with both internal and external customers
